The Securities Authority Participates in World Investor Week 2023

03-Oct-2023

The Securities Authority is participating in the World Investor Week campaign of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), which is being held internationally from October 2-8. The event aims to promote financial education and investor protection worldwide, with the support of the G20, under the presidency of India, as in previous years.

The Authority is participating through a range of awareness and educational activities, which are being disseminated through its website and social media platforms during the event. It is also participating in international virtual seminars organized by the International Organization of Securities Regulators.

The seventh annual World Investor Week (WIW) celebration began yesterday with a variety of activities worldwide, where securities regulators, IOSCO members, and other stakeholders are working to promote investor education and protection. Given the increasing participation of retail investors in capital markets in recent years, these investor issues have risen to the top of the WIW agenda. While the campaign is being held internationally during the first week of this month, its local activities will continue until the end of next month. Financial innovation impacts the financial system, bringing new job opportunities to the industry and potential benefits to investors, but it also presents challenges and risks that must be addressed effectively. Therefore, financial education plays a crucial role, alongside investor protection measures implemented by regulators and the industry.

To this end, various financial education events will be held targeting individuals, families, and individual investors. The WIW campaign focuses on three main themes: investor resilience, crypto assets, and sustainable finance, in addition to other topics such as fraud prevention, investment fundamentals, and digital technology and finance. Participating regulatory bodies have also identified other relevant topics for their local campaigns. Mr. Jean-Paul Servier, Chairman of the Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and Chairman of the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority, said: “The World Investor Week campaign is a key operational initiative through which IOSCO supports investor education and protection. The main themes of WIW 2023 are integral to IOSCO’s priorities regarding investor protection and sustainable finance. WIW’s theme of sustainable investment in investor education builds on IOSCO’s achievements in sustainable finance, such as the recent endorsement of the ISSB’s Global Sustainability Reporting Standards. WIW also focuses on crypto assets, and this year IOSCO will present a Global Policy Handbook to address key risks to investor protection and market integrity.”

Pasquale Monavó (CONSOB, Italy), Chairman of IOSCO’s Committee VIII, added: “New regulators and stakeholders from developed markets are joining the event.” Both established and emerging investors are participating in this year's WIW campaign. This increased interest underscores how financial education and investor protection have become top priorities for regulators and market participants worldwide.
